Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte will run for senator in 2022. The longtime Davao mayor announced his decision from a stadium on the edge of Manila.
Duterte told the crowd the decision “is for the love of the country.”
In his speech, Duterte said the senate is “my arena. I’m running here, so that you won’t have the risk of seeing me fire guns to your compound.”
Duterte has been unable to fulfill his promise to build a giant “Sky City” along the eastern coast of the country amid building delays and a lack of funds. According to a report, Duterte will now have to rely on the strong influence of family members who enjoy a close relationship with him.
It’s unclear if Duterte’s son and daughter will run against each other in the senate vote. However, eldest son Davao Mayor Tomas Duterte has already declared his candidacy. Tomislav is reportedly also eyeing a gubernatorial bid in 2022.
Tomas also shared with media his father’s priority issue, a compromise on a new constitution. The current constitution was approved in 2001 after a protracted debate and political strife.
